What is Detox Tea?
A ‘Detox Tea’ is any tea that promotes the removal of toxins from the body by supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes. This in turn helps to promote weight loss, better digestion, increased energy, glowing skin… the list goes on! A number of different herbal ingredients may be used in a detox or weight loss tea to promote liver function/regeneration, increased metabolism, fat burning, appetite regulation, waste removal, anti-inflammation, gastrointestinal tract healing, increased energy, and enhanced circulation of nutrients and oxygen to key organs and the skin (1).
Detoxification occurs through the body’s multiple channels of elimination, which all function to filter and rid the body of toxins (processed food by-products, pollutants, synthetic chemicals, heavy metals). Excess toxin build up has been linked to free-radical damage, reduced lifespan, and an undesirable variety of chronic health conditions. Channels of elimination that function to detoxify the body and excrete toxins include the liver, bowels, skin, lymph, blood, lungs, and kidneys (2). While many detox programs purely target the colon (i.e. needing to pass a bowel motion), a truly holistic and effective detox program implements a multi-faceted approach to toxin removal, as practiced here at Slim By Nature.
Does Detox Tea Help You Lose Weight?
Many different teas fall under the ‘herbal tea’ category, each with their own specific medicinal actions and benefits. By infusing dried herbal ingredients in boiling water, the remedies beneficial constituents are extracted. Some of these include the natural bioactive compounds carotenoids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, coumarins, alkaloids, polyacetylenes, saponins and terpenoids, among others (3). Research shows that many of these compounds (and the herbs they originate from) can promote weight loss and result in many other health benefits (3)!
Herbal teas are often referred to as ‘non-nutritive bioactive compounds’- they contain no calories and are instead rich in ‘phytonutrients’ or ‘lifespan nutrients’ (such as antioxidants, and the other beneficial constituents listed above) that are involved in the risk reduction of non-communicable diseases and provide an array of medicinal benefits (3).
How to use Detox Tea to Aid Weight Loss
Although the exact quantity and frequency of tea consumption needed to promote weight loss is not known, we do know that the more regularly someone drinks tea, the better! A 2013 study of 1,210 adults found that habitual tea drinkers showed a 19.6% reduction in body fat percentage compared with non–habitual tea drinkers (5)!

5 tips on How to use Detox Tea for Weight Loss:
Drinking herbal detox tea is akin to drinking natural medicine- there are a myriad of scientifically researched benefits that may result from this delicious and beneficial practice! Below we discuss ___ different ways that tea has been shown to support weight loss!
Detox teas help to improve weight loss results by accelerating metabolism and increasing the body’s fat burning abilities. One important factor in the metabolism boosting benefit of tea is its ability to counteract the decrease in metabolism that is usually present during weight loss (5).
Increased fat burning (Thermogenic benefit):
Detox teas can help to improve weight loss by accelerating metabolism and increasing the body’s fat burning abilities. Teas that are rich in the compounds catechin and caffeine have proven time and time again to possess thermogenic effects, meaning they are able to increase an individual’s rate of fat burning (5) (21). This thermogenic effect likely occurs through a number of potential mechanisms, such as the reduced fat absorption and the increased oxidation of fat molecules (fat breakdown) via sympathetic activation of the central nervous system (5).
Increasing Energy Expenditure:
You read that correctly, drinking certain teas can make you burn more energy! Energy Expenditure is the amount of energy that each person needs to complete physical functions, such as movement/exercise, as well as involuntary functions like breathing, digesting food, and circulating blood. Research has shown that drinking certain teas can make our bodies utilise/burn more energy, and also prevent the natural decline of energy expenditure observed during a diet- both of these factors contribute to weight loss (5)!
Alterations to gut bacteria:
Recent research suggests that drinking tea decreases body fat by inhibiting certain gut enzymes (catechol-O-methyltransferase, acetyl-CoA carboxylase) and microbiota interactions (7). This is linked to the original ‘short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) hypothesis’, which suggests that the weight-loss ability of a given tea is determined by a combination of carbohydrate digestive enzyme inhibition and subsequent reactions of the left over undigested carbohydrates with the gut bacteria. Put simply; when we drink tea we don’t digest certain carbohydrates, which then remain in our gut and sends messages to our bacteria to decrease body fat.
Reduced cravings and appetite:
Tea has been shown to suppress appetite and food cravings by balancing our blood glucose and directly affecting our hunger hormones. Tea may work to reduce appetite (and therefore food intake and weight) by interacting with hungary hormones (leptin) (9), glucose balance, inulin sensitivity (10), and protecting brain centers that are sensitive to serotonin and dopamine; in turn inhibiting cravings by making the centers more sensitive to these transmitters (11). Cinnamon is a herbal tea known for balancing blood sugar levels and assisting with appetite control. It is therefore also useful in the treatment of insulin resistance and diabetes (12).
Note: Most of the weight-loss benefits above are related to the polyphenol content of tea. A wide range of the herbal ingredients used in our SLim By Nature 123 TEatox teas contain polyphenols, including:
- Dandelion (13)
- Cinnamon (14)
- Ginger (15)
- Burdock (16)
- Nettle (17)
- Spearmint (18)
- Fenugreek (19)
- Cardamom (20)
Tea is a powerful, natural tool to help burn fat and support you on your weight loss journey! Not only will it help boost your metabolism, positively alter your gut bacteria to burn more fat, and help reduce cravings, teas are also powerful antioxidants with a host of other health benefits, such as improved digestion, energy, skin, sleep, and reduced risk of chronic illness! Happy sipping!
