I’d always known about B12 and its importance, but this new research was like opening Pandora’s Box. The more I searched, the more I realised how little this information was commonly known. I discovered so much about B12 that I was literally bewildered to find out that about 40% of us are B12 deficient! So, with the platform I have built over the years with Slim By Nature, I knew I wanted to bring so much more attention to this issue, because it is so important!
Research of Vitamin B12
Just so you know… B12 is so important, it gets wordy! But stick with it!
The Vitamin B12 nutrient is one that helps to maintain a healthy nervous system, blood cells, and is vital in creating DNA – the genetic material in all cells. B12 is also an essential bacterium needed to prevent megaloblastic anemia, a type of anemia that can make you tired and weak. Also, a deficiency in B12, can actually lead to a demyelinating nervous system disease, dementia, psychiatric illness, vascular occlusions, a suppressed immune system and bone marrow failure. According to the World Health Organisation, B12 is also vital in preventing neurological defects in infants, and a deficiency can quickly lead to implications during pregnancy.
With B12 being such an important vitamin, and with a deficiency so prevalent among Australian’s – I was so confused as to why this deficiency was so common! Why aren’t we getting enough of it? In our modern world, vitamin B12 has been extremely difficult to source naturally. You see, B12 is actually a bacterium that our ancestors could find in the soil, or in streams. They didn’t filter their water like we do today. Rather, they would drink from a stream or eat fruits and root vegetables that had been covered in soil, and ingest this bacterium naturally, which would then of course be absorbed into their blood stream.
The source deficiency goes with animal products that we eat. For instance when a cow eats grass, the soil from the root of that grass is ingested and absorbed. But why can’t we just eat more meat and animal products? Well, due to the incredible amount of mass agriculture that has been happening over time, our soil is actually so much less dense with nutrition than it was a couple hundred years ago – so much less that unless they are 100% organic, animals are actually injected with B12 (and a lot of other nasty things) to have sufficient B12 levels. I don’t know about you but I am soooo not into feeding my family, nor my body with crazy amounts of hormones and god knows what else!
This is where I began to explore B12 supplementation directly and I knew I wanted to create a healthy, junk-free supplement that could be taken by every member of my family without worry. But then, when researching how some suppliers and labs create B12, I fell into yet another pitfall, where I discovered that there are different types of B12 that fall under the category of ‘B12’. The term ‘B12’ is actually used to describe a group of vitamins called ‘cobalamins’, and there are essentially four different types of cobalamins including; methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin – which are the two co-factors of B12 – and there is also hydroxocobalamin and cyanocobalamin.
Now I know these “cobalamins” are huge words and trust me it took me a while to get my head around it too… but stay with me (I have colour-coded to try and simplify it for us all. Green=Good, Red=Not so Good)! I discovered that hydroxocobalamin is actually the one that pharmaceutical companies tend to use, administered as an injection! This put me off so much because no way would I make my family go through that unnecessarily!
Of course, the hydroxocobalamin isn’t necessarily bad for you, but if you read on you will see why methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin are better for your body to take in. However, cyanocobalamin is the one that you want to avoid because it is essentially bonded with cyanide. (Which if you didn’t know, is bad juju!). Commercially, it is the type of B12 that is produced by bacteria fermentation (yuck!) for the purpose of mass-producing a cheap, low-cost B12 supplement.
The Best Form of Vitamin B12
But it’s not all bad news! I also found that methylcobalamin – being a co-factor of B12 – is one of the two best forms of B12, especially when combined with its other co-factor which is adenosylcobalamin. THESE ARE THE ONLY FORMS OF B12 THAT ARE ALREADY BROKEN DOWN. Meaning that your body can absorb and use them almost instantaneously.
